ACKMORTH HUNDHILL LANE SE41NE (east side) 3/6 Hundhill Hall 25.3.1968 – II

Country house. Late C18 or early C19; slightly altered. Coursed squared sandstone, stone slate roofs on 2 levels. U-plan formed by double-depth main range with receding wings. Symmetrical composition with 3-storey 5-bay centre and slightly set-back 2-storey 2-bay wings; band between ground floor windows, and 1st floor sill-band; central doorway with glazed and panelled double doors, moulded architrave, and cornice on consoles; tall 8-pane sashes at ground floor, 6-pane sashes at 1st floor, and low 6-pane sashes at 2nd floor, scrolled iron gutter brackets; hipped roof with 3 multiple-flue chimney stacks behind the ridge. Flanking side wings have matching fenestration and hipped roofs, that on the right with an inserted skylight; attached to side wall of left wing is a low service wing (which is of less interest); return wall of right wing has a tall canted bay window at ground floor, and to the rear of this 3 windows at ground floor like those at the front, and three 12-pane sashes above. Interior: C17-style muntin-and-rail panelling in both front rooms, and in rear room of right wing; ex situ overmantel in front left room, inscribed “CP 1616”; fine open-string staircase with 2 balusters per tread and wreathed curtail; former kitchen in rear room of left wing (now boiler house) has remains of former open fireplace with spit-rack (etc).
